Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, wife of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has dismissed widespread reports claiming she has filed for divorce from her husband, describing the allegations as false and deliberately misleading.

In a statement shared on her social media platforms, Okwu-Kanu refuted the viral claims, insisting that she has not instituted any divorce proceedings and urging members of the public to disregard the reports.

"My attention was drawn to false reports circulating online claiming that I have filed for divorce from my husband, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

"For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation.

"It is deeply concerning that individuals continue to fabricate stories about my family and present them as facts without any attempt at verification. Deliberately spreading falsehoods does not advance any cause; it only misleads the public and undermines responsible journalism.

"I urge members of the public to rely only on information that comes directly from me or through my authorised representatives," she said.

The denial follows the circulation of unverified reports across social media alleging that the couple's marriage had broken down.

Kanu remains in custody following his conviction on terrorism-related charges by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In November 2025, Justice James Omotosho found the IPOB leader guilty on all seven counts filed against him by the Federal Government.

The court sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on counts one, two, four, five and six, 20 years' imprisonment on count three, and five years on count seven. The sentences are to run concurrently.
