A survivor of the brutal attack on Kum village in the Rim District of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State has recounted the chilling moments armed assailants stormed his home and slaughtered nine members of his family in one of the deadliest attacks recorded in the area.

James Yohanna, one of only three survivors of the Saturday night massacre, said the attackers, whom he identified as Fulani-speaking terrorists, deliberately targeted his household, killing his wife, son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and daughters in what he described as a calculated extermination.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, the grief-stricken father said he narrowly escaped death after fleeing into nearby bushes while gunmen opened fire on his family.

According to him, the attackers appeared to be searching specifically for him because of his relationship with the Regional Chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo.

Recounting the horrific incident, Yohanna said the attack began around 11:30 p.m. when he heard dogs barking frantically, followed by the sound of heavy boots outside his home.

He said the attackers first attempted to force their way into his brother's house, shooting him in the arm and leg as he fled before turning their attention to his own residence.

"They broke into my son's room after demanding to know where the father of the house was," Yohanna recalled.

"I heard my son pleading with them, saying, 'Please don't harm us.' But one of the attackers, speaking Hausa with a Fulani accent, replied, 'Today you will learn a hard lesson.' They shot my son, his wife and their two-month-old baby."

Realising the danger, Yohanna said he pushed his six-year-old daughter through window before jumping out himself and escaping into the bush as bullets whizzed past him.

He said he later attempted to crawl back toward the house but was forced to watch helplessly as the attackers entered another room where his daughters were sleeping.

"I heard automatic gunfire everywhere, then silence," he said.

"As they were leaving, one of my four-year-old daughters screamed. One of the attackers went back and shot her."

Yohanna said by the time soldiers arrived and he returned home, he was confronted with an unimaginable tragedy.

"My wife, my son, his wife, their two-month-old baby, and my daughters were all lying dead," he said.

The attack has sparked renewed outrage over the worsening insecurity in Plateau State, where communities have repeatedly come under deadly assaults despite the presence of security forces.

Residents have continued to call on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities and bring those responsible for the killings to justice.
