Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, and former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, on Sunday met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as political consultations ahead of the 2027 general election continue to intensify.

Makinde disclosed the meeting in a brief post on his official Facebook page, saying the trio visited the former president at his Abeokuta residence to discuss issues affecting the nation ahead of the next general election.

"Earlier today, we visited Baba, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, in Abeokuta," the governor wrote.

"Our discussions centred on important national issues in view of the upcoming general election. We appreciate Baba for his wise counsel at this crucial time in our nation's history."

The meeting comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with observers closely monitoring consultations among key political figures.

In May, Makinde formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election after completing his second and final term as governor of Oyo State.

Speaking at the joint mega rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Ibadan, Makinde said Nigeria required urgent reforms, declaring that "the time to reset Nigeria is now."

He lamented the country's worsening socio-economic conditions, saying many Nigerians had been forced into survival mode while those entrusted with governance had failed to adequately address their welfare.

Makinde, who is the presidential candidate of the APM, is expected to face President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is seeking a second term, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in the 2027 presidential race.

Although Oyinlola remains a prominent member of the PDP and Fayemi is still a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), their joint visit to Obasanjo has fuelled speculation that the meeting may be linked to Makinde's presidential ambition and broader opposition consultations.

Obasanjo has yet to publicly endorse any presidential aspirant for the 2027 election, though there has been widespread speculation that the former president is sympathetic to Obi's presidential bid.

The elder statesman has also dominated political discussions in recent days after alleging that Atiku gave the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na'Abba, ₦5 million to initiate impeachment proceedings against him during his first term as president.

Atiku, however, dismissed the allegation, accusing Obasanjo of fabricating the claims in a bid to advance the political interests of his preferred candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
