A 100-level student of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, has reportedly sustained gunshot injuries following an attack by suspected cultists on the university campus.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday, just two days after suspected members of rival cult groups engaged in a gun battle on the campus, raising fresh concerns over the safety of students and staff.

The Monday confrontation was reportedly triggered by a supremacy dispute between suspected members of the Vikings and Ku Klux Klan cult groups.

While details of Wednesday’s incident remained sketchy, a source familiar with the development said the injured student had been taken to a hospital for treatment.

According to the source, doctors were preparing to carry out surgery to remove bullet pellets reportedly lodged in the student’s body, while his friends were making contributions towards the cost of the procedure.

“His close friends were contributing money to raise funds for the surgery to happen,” the source said.

The source, who declined to disclose the identities of those involved because of the sensitivity of the matter, said it could not be immediately established whether the victim had any affiliation with a cult group.

A video circulating on social media showed the injured student lying on a hospital bed before some of his coursemates reportedly carried him into the university premises.

The Rivers State Police Command had earlier confirmed Monday’s clash involving suspected rival cult groups.

The command’s spokesperson, Blessing Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the police were investigating the incident.

Reacting to the latest development, Agabe confirmed that she had seen the video circulating online and said she would obtain further information from the Divisional Police Officer overseeing the area.

She had not provided additional details as of Wednesday evening.

Amid the renewed security concerns, the university management announced the immediate suspension of all remaining activities scheduled for the Students’ Union Government Week.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, the university’s Registrar, Dr Chinonye Ajie, directed students to return to their classrooms for normal academic activities on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The management said the decision was necessary to protect the peace and security of the institution.

“This is to inform the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Community that all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government Week have been suspended by the University Management with immediate effect,” the statement said.

It added, “Students are therefore advised to return to classes on Thursday, August 13th, 2026, for normal academic activities.”

The university also warned students against engaging in activities capable of disrupting academic programmes or threatening the security of the institution.

It further stated that students who failed to attend lectures would be held responsible for their actions, urging them to conduct themselves in ways that would protect their academic progress and sustain peace on campus.
