The Osun State Police Command has recovered a second corpse following Sunday’s violent incident at the Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife.

The discovery brings the number of reported fatalities from the incident to two, as security operatives intensify investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the recovery on Monday, saying the corpse was found around the vicinity of the motor park and had been deposited at a morgue.

“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for more investigation,” Ojelabi said.

The development came as the remains of Olalekan Oyeyemi, an Osun Accord chieftain popularly known as ‘Emir Ajagungbade’, were buried at his newly completed residence in the Agunbelewo area of Osogbo.

Traditionalists performed the burial rites in the presence of close relatives and priests, while associates of the deceased who accompanied his remains from the Osun State University Teaching Hospital (UNIOSUNTH) stayed outside the residence.

Oyeyemi was reportedly shot dead on Sunday during a clash at the Mayfair Motor Park involving his group and another faction led by a National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) leader identified as Sibi.

A video that emerged on social media after the incident showed Oyeyemi lying face down in a pool of blood inside a vehicle.

Governor Ademola Adeleke confirmed his death in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, and directed the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, to identify and arrest those responsible.

The incident was reportedly linked to a leadership dispute over plans to install Oyeyemi as the next chairman of the NURTW in Osun State.

Ojelabi said the Mayfair Motor Park had been shut in line with the governor’s directive.

“The governor has decided that the park should not operate. The park has not been operating,” he said.

The police spokesperson also appealed to individuals whose names had been mentioned in connection with the violence to report themselves to the police rather than engage in social media exchanges.

“The Commissioner of Police has promised that all those involved will be apprehended and face the law, irrespective of who they are,” Ojelabi said.

Tension was also reported at the hospital where Oyeyemi’s remains were kept before their release.

Suspected hoodlums described as associates of the deceased reportedly attacked two hospital workers after discovering that they were recording the incident with their phones.

Additional police vehicles were subsequently deployed to the hospital premises, helping to restore calm.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Commissioner for Transportation, Sesan Oyedele, denied claims that he had summoned NURTW leaders to his Modakeke residence to endorse Oyeyemi as the union’s next state chairman.

Oyedele said the NURTW leaders had approached him themselves to seek his support.

“They came around 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. I told them I would present their request to the governor and other officials,” he said.

The commissioner added that he learnt of Oyeyemi’s killing about two hours after the group left his residence.
