African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Dino Melaye, has accused the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) of corruption over the administration of the Federal Government’s student loan scheme.

Melaye described NELFUND as a “haven of corruption” while questioning the adequacy of the financial support being provided to students under the programme.

The former lawmaker specifically criticised the N20,000 monthly upkeep allowance reportedly given to beneficiaries, arguing that the amount was insufficient to meet the needs of students amid rising living and education costs.

He also challenged the Federal Government’s description of the scheme as an initiative to pay students’ tuition fees, questioning whether N20,000 could cover annual tuition in government-owned tertiary institutions.

“Which government school takes N20,000 as annual school fees?” Melaye asked.

“Why is Tinubu claiming he’s paying students’ school fees when he’s giving them only N20,000?”

His comments have added to ongoing concerns over the implementation of the student loan scheme, particularly the adequacy of the financial assistance available to students and the extent to which the programme is easing the cost of tertiary education for beneficiaries and their families.
