Military retirees on Tuesday barricaded the entrance to the Military Pensions Board office in Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, protesting what they described as an unfair formula for adjusting their pension payments.
The protesting veterans blocked access to the premises with canopies and chairs, while armed soldiers prevented them from entering the office.
The demonstration comes weeks after retired military personnel protested at the Ministry of Defence in September, demanding an upward review of their pensions to reflect salary increases granted to serving military officers and other personnel.
Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, had reportedly assured the retirees that their pensions would be adjusted in October. However, the veterans have expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome, alleging that the calculation method adopted by the Military Pensions Board has left some pensioners disadvantaged.
The retirees argued that the adjustment does not adequately reflect the salary increases awarded to serving personnel, which they cited as the basis for their demand for improved pension benefits.
The latest protest highlights persistent concerns among retired military personnel over their welfare and the implementation of pension adjustments, despite the earlier assurance from the Defence Minister.
The protesters are calling on the Military Pensions Board to review the formula and adopt a transparent calculation method that ensures pension adjustments fairly reflect the salary increases granted to serving personnel.
They insist that the authorities must address the alleged discrepancies and ensure that eligible retirees receive the pension benefits due to them.
