Arise News anchor, Rufai Oseni, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his declaration that Nigeria will not return to fuel subsidy, arguing that living conditions in Egypt are better than those in Nigeria.
Oseni made the remarks on Arise Television’s *The Morning Show*, where he compared the two countries’ human development indicators, particularly electricity supply and education.
Tinubu had, on Monday, dismissed promises by opposition presidential candidates to restore fuel subsidy if elected, during an event with the City Boys Movement in Abuja.
Reacting to the president’s position, Oseni questioned whether Tinubu was aware of Egypt’s performance on key development indicators compared with Nigeria.
“Does President Tinubu know that all the human development indices in Egypt are better than those of Nigeria?” he asked.
The broadcaster cited electricity access and education funding as examples of the gap between the two countries, claiming that Egypt provides universal access to electricity and has a higher electricity generation capacity.
“Somebody should tell him that the Egyptian citizen has 100 per cent access to power. Egypt has produced over 63,000 megawatts of electricity. Education is well better. 2.5 per cent of Gross Domestic Product, GDP.
“Nigeria’s own is about 0.5 per cent. There is no parameter you compare Egypt to Nigeria.
“So, in terms of going back to Egypt, is it not better for somebody to be in a country where electricity works?” Oseni said.
His comments come amid continued debate over the economic impact of fuel subsidy removal and opposition calls for its restoration, with electricity supply, education funding and living standards remaining key issues in assessing Nigerians’ welfare.
