Giwa FC forced a bitter pill down the throats of one of the league's elite club, Rangers International at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium where a Shuiab Ibrahim strike ensured that the over 3,000 fans that thronged the stadium left with long faces.
It was open exchange in the first 45 minutes with both teams sizing up each other and hardly creating any anxious moments.
Then, the game saw some frenzy in the second half when Giwa FC seized the initiative, dominated possession and took the game to their hosts, reaping a dividend on the 50th minute when Ibrahim took his time, selected his spot to slot in the only goal that separated the two sides.
As hard as Rangers tried they only got close but fell short as the final touch did not yield the expected result.
The coming in of Emeka Eze and Chisom Egbuchulam brought in sparks to the Rangers setup but Giwa's goalkeeper Friday Achimugwu turned out the hero for the away team.
As hard as the strike force of the home team featuring Odah Onoriode and Samuel Agba tried, they only saw their efforts hit the woodwork with Chisom getting the last chance on the last minute of the added time but failing to secure the much desired equaliser for Coach Kelechi Emeteole.
Giwa FC Chief Coach, Tony Bulus, after the match maintained that though his boys won, it was a very difficult game.
"The boys played with determination and gave their best but we must appreciate the centre referee who allowed the game to be open. Without him, we won’t have won this game so he is the man of the match", the Giwa FC coach said.
Emeteole was whisked off the stadium as angry fans descended on him, accusing him of keeping good players on the bench.
