ABUJA—AS the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senators await the leadership of the party on the zoning of positions, especially the principal officers of the National Assembly, there are indications that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is plotting to snatch the Senate President from the party.
The APC has about 60 Senators elected on its platform in the March 28 National Assembly election, while the PDP that before now had the majority, only has 49 senators elected in the election.
Investigations revealed that as the North East and North Central zones are lobbying for the Senate presidency, the PDP, is putting its house in order to come out with a candidate anticipating that the APC might not agree on a sole candidate.
An APC Senator, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, yesterday, expressed the fear that the PDP would likely grab the Senate presidency seat if the APC did not put its house in order.
The Senator also said that for the sake of justice and fair-play, the APC leadership should zone the Senate presidency to the North East that produced the second highest number of votes to the party after the North West.
Besides, he argued that because the North East had been devastated as a result of the insurgency and had been the most marginalised in terms of infrastructure, ceding the Senate President seat to the North East would assuage the zone.
He also said that the North East had never been given the opportunity of occupying the Senate President seat since the Second Republic, adding that the North Central had always been occupying the Senate president seat.
The APC senator said that since 1999, it was the two states of North East of Borno and Yobe that had been steadfast in the opposition apart from Lagos State, adding that zoning the seat to the zone would encourage the people for their steadfastness.
