Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said on Friday that the departing Steven Gerrard will return to the club in the future and that he would like him to join his coaching staff.

Captain Gerrard is leaving Liverpool in the summer to join Los Angeles Galaxy but Rodgers said the door would always be open for him to return.

“Steven leaving here isn’t permanent,’’ Rodgers told a news conference on Friday.

“He’s somebody I’d love to have working with me when he has finished playing. That opportunity for him to come back will be there for as long as I’m here.’’

Gerrard is already taking his coaching badges and said on Thursday that a coaching job at the club might be something he would be interested in.
