The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has blamed the death of a part two student of the University of Ibadan, Mayowa Alaran on the negligence of duty by the health personnel at the institution's hospital.

NAN's Joint Campus Committee Vice Chairman in Oyo State, Niniola Taoheed while addressing newsmen in Ibadan yesterday, said his death had shown that students' welfare was a myth at the institution.

According to him, it is agreed that Mayowa died as a result of Jaja health workers negligence. He said it was disheartening that the school authority called a press conference to state otherwise.

"Let's assume the boy had actually died before getting to the university health centre, the school is yet to explain the negligence of the driver, whom it took more then 30 minutes to start the engine of one of the three ambulances.

"Before now, we used to have a health post system in independence hall of residences where nurses are attached to attend to cases of emergency.

"Over time, this arrangement was dropped. Attempts to bring it back to indy has been abortive," he said.

The student leader said "we need more than the Vice Chancellor's rhetorical prowess to redeem the challenges we are all facing.

"We need something more tangible than a weightless promise that our health system should be improved," he added.

He demanded that at least three ambulances and health posts be provided in order to cater for emergency around the halls of residences.

He explained that one of the ambulances be stationed at the main school, another at Idia/Awo axis and the last one to cater for Indy/Zik constituency on 24 hours standby.

However, he debunked claim that the death of the student was responsible for the shift in the students' union election, saying that past administration had been grumbling about the issue, but the school authority seems not to listen.
