Top Three Teams in Tricky Games of Match Day 10

Midweek contests are back on the plate once more, and this time there will be tantalising match-ups in the Glo Premier League Match Day 10 today that will signal a three-week recess till June 14.

The top-three teams, Sunshine Stars, Gabros FC and Wikki Tourists, are all tied on 17 points and they are up for some feisty games that could see them either win or drop points and potentially change the complexion at the top of the ranking.

The Big Two, Enyimba and champions Kano Pillars, have thrown themselves back in the ring with victories on the road at the weekend and will aim to continue their push on the pacesetters in the top division.

League leaders Sunshine Stars return home after snatching a draw at Nasarawa United at the weekend from the jaws of defeat. But they have no fewer than seven teams on their tails and any slip up will see them drop off from the top of the table.

Kwara United had the chance to rest at the weekend as Warri Wolves were on the continent in the CAF Confederation Cup. The Harmony Boys start the match day in 10th place. But they have not beaten Sunshine Stars since 2012 and will aim to halt that run of poor results against their rivals.

With the number of away wins growing by every match day, many pundits now feel that Kano Pillars' invincibility at home spanning over 11 years looks under threat. But the champions have recovered from their recent poor run on the road to claim 1-0 win at Abia Warriors on Sunday, and are now poised for their 194th unbeaten run home.

Gabros now stand between Pillars and the number 194. The Nnewi-based club have done so well since returning to the top flight after 10 years in the lower division. Gabros sit pretty in second place and will look to dare where most Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) clubs have stuttered though they have never won in Kano against Pillars in the premier league era.

Bayelsa United were just 15 minutes away from securing a draw at El-Kanemi and that stretched their run without a win to five. It will be one month, one day since Bayelsa United last won a game in the league and will be all out to claim the full points under coaches George Ederekumoh and Samke Nyanabofa.

Wikki have continued to grind out results since their return to the NPFL and quietly too. Their coach, Abdu Maikaba appears to be working magic with the Bauchi club who are in third place, but they will come up against a Bayelsa United side condemned to win their first league match in a month.

It is three games without a win in all competitions for Giwa FC, and they are yet to score in two league games in the scoreless draw against FC Taraba at home and at Enyimba. But the Elephants of Jos are always capable of surprises like they have shown at Rangers, Lobi Stars and even at Enyimba.

The Blue Angels were able to claim four points off Giwa FC last season and won this same fixture 2-1 but the Port Harcourt club are in dire need of a win after seven matches without one.

Last season, FC Taraba dispatched Dolphins 2-0 in this same fixture with a goal in each half from Usman Mohammed and Aminu Abubakar. After their early good spell this season the powers of the Jalingo-based club have waned though the 0-0 draw in Jos against Giwa FC will lighten up things amidst a seven-game run without a win.

Dolphins at the weekend just could not end their poor form against Enyimba and suffered a 2-1 loss at home. Now they take that disappointing result to Taraba with the hope of rebounding to winning ways. But can they stop FC Taraba from claiming their first league win in two months and five days?

El-Kanemi are one of the teams quietly grinding out results match day after match day especially when they play at home. But they travel to Aba to face Enyimba where they have failed to score in their last five trips there since September 2004.

The Peoples' Elephant have come off a very good result at Dolphins where they won 2-1 but their coach Kadiri Ikhana is not carried away. He told npfl.ng: "We must stay on top of our game and avoid dropping points at home again." Enyimba are favourites going into this game but El-Kanemi have the factor to turn things on its head based on their form in their last three matches.

Lobi are in bottom place and are the only team still without a win after nine rounds of matches in the Glo Premier League. The Makurdi-based club were close to getting a seventh draw of the season in Bauchi against Wikki before Uche Martins scored from the spot on the 76th minute.

Heartland have huffed and puffed so far and that has earned their coach Erasmus Onuh an ultimatum from the club which is still under review. But they steadied themselves to down Akwa United 2-0 in Owerri at the weekend and will now hope to string up a good run of results.

These are two teams with slight differences in form guides from their last three matches - Akwa United with one draw and two defeats while Shooting Stars have notched up one win, a draw and a loss. Apart from taking a point from four games on the road, Shooting Stars have failed to score an away goal so far.

Akwa United have lived up to their moniker 'The Promise Keepers' so far as they have managed just two wins out of nine games, scoring only three goals. Their best outing so far this term remains the 2-0 win over Dolphins in April. Can they re-enact that performance against Shooting Stars who will hope to claim their first win on the road since a 2-0 success at Ranchers Bees in June 2010?

The Flying Antelopes have been able to come off two games on the bounce without a loss including the 1-1 draw at traditional rivals, Shooting Stars on Sunday. Interestingly, Nasarawa United were held by Sunshine Stars at home as they have not attained that same form of last season that saw them nearly compete for the title.
