NYSC CORPS CONVEYS SYMPOSIUM FOR SECURITY SENSITISATION

The National Youth Service Corps Akinyele Local Government Community Development service team has on Tuesday 19th of September, 2013, called on the members of the public to imbibe the culture of security consciousness.

The NYSC Corps made this call through a sensitization programme with the theme “Developing a Security Culture for Sustainable National Security, Whose Responsibility”, advocating that the attainment of a secured nation is a collective responsibility and not left to security officers alone.

CEOAFRICA gathered from the PRO of NYSC Corps, Akinyele LG, Odusanya Oludare Afolabi that the leakages in security awareness and the consequent effect on the people has informed the convening of the very important symposium.

Oludare highlighted that the recent cases of kidnap and Boko’Haram threat directed against the Youth Corps members and the society at large has rendered it critical for people to be intimated on how best to secure themselves and their environment.

Deliberating on the theme of the symposium, Dr. Jegede A.O, DPO Akinyele LG. who represented the Oyo State Commissioner of Police at the occasion disclosed that the concept of security entails that everyone should be personally alert security-wise and also be one’s brother’s keeper at all time.

He noted that the economic growth of a nation also determined by the level of security consciousness of every individual in protecting lives, property and image of organization, stressing that no country would dare invest in an unsecured environment.

Samuel Oluwaleye, Representing Director of State Security Service Oyo Command, also speaking on the theme, gave an insight of security tips that will help in getting people free from any move that will endanger the security of the nation.

He posited that people should endeavour to study their environment to take precautions against any imminent danger; that people should move to safer place like police station or safe public places if they notice that they are being followed by some persons; that people should avoid careless handling of packages that could spell doom; that people  should change their lock if they suspiciously misplace their key and also endeavor to change the lock when they relocate to a new house.

He further stressed that people should avoid moving alone at night or some places strange to them; that people should also avoid revealing their personal information that could be detrimental to their security, adding that the country will be reasonably secured if people imbibe these simple security tips.

Alhaji Lateef Wahaab Adisa (SC), Divisional Officer, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Akinyele Division, Moniya, Ibadan, who also is  the Chairman at the symposium, also stated that the precarious state of the nation has made it paramount for individual to imbibe security culture to save oneself and the nation at large.

He emphasized that security is not the total absence of threat but the ability to respond to security breaches and threats with expediency and expertise, urging that security personnel should embrace multifunctional institutional activities to help strengthen security of the state and aslo attract economic prosperity.

However, Mr. Cletus Ilobanafor, Chairman, CEOAFRICA, encouraged the youth at this occasion to always welcome programmes like this to gain more empowerment on how best to be successful in their environment.
