An audit conducted on electricity consumption in the state has revealed that about 4,358,000kwh of electricity are wasted annually in Lagos.

CEOAFRICA news desk learnt about this from the statement of the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Taofeek Tijani during the flag-off of power conservation campaign in the state.

He remarked that although Lagos requires about 10,000 megawatts of electricity to achieve steady supply and currently gets less than 1,000 megawatts from the national grid, a lot of what is generated privately is wasted.

In his words “The nation’s commercial nerve centre requires about 10,000 megawatts (MW) for it to enjoy regular electricity supply, yet only one percent of the 20 million residents practice energy conservation.”

He disclosed however that the audit report of power wastages has necessitated the quick intervention by the state government who declared October as the first as the first ever energy conservation month to be observed by the people of Lagos State.

According to the commissioner, the residents consume approximately 162, 000 litres of diesel per day, resulting in an enormous carbon monoxide emission per household.

Tijani said the state government had already shown an example by retrofitting all light bulbs within the state secretariat in Ikeja with energy saving bulbs.

However, the move as stated by Tijani was to save at least 978,90kwh of energy and achieve reduced emission by at least 1, 278, 44 light bulbs yearly.
