The European Union has declared a funding package estimated at 250M to 275euros for development projects in Liberia within the next few years.
CEOAFRICA gathered this was declared at a news conference marking the close of the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) Department in Liberia.
According to the report, Liberia has benefited several millions Euros from the ECHO program of the European Union.
The Director of Operations of East, West and Southern Africa and Indian Ocean of the EU ECHO Program, Mr. Cees Witterbrood, pointed out at the occasion that the humanitarian relief of the union has been replaced with development cooperation in Liberia, relating that the closure of the ECHO program of the EU in Liberia marks the end of emergency in the country.
He further stated that the office of humanitarian assistance of the EU has been very supportive to humanity in Liberia since 1992, providing assistance to health sector, food security and water and sanitation as well as protecting the vulnerable groups and the reintegration and repatriation of displaced people in the Liberian society.
Mr. Cees however noted that the EU has now moved towards investing in the development of the country since the emergency situation in Liberia is over.
