Man apprehended for obtaining money under false pretence

The Special Fraud Unit has arrested one Isiaka Yusuf Adeleke who poses as an Alfa (Islamic Cleric) to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.

DSP Ngozi Isintume-Agu, Police Public Relations Officer (Special Fraud Unit-Lagos), disclosed this in a press release received by CEOAFRICA.com.

 She explained that the suspect was arrested when the victim reported the case to the Commissioner of Police.

 “According to the  petition to the Commissioner of Police by the victim alleged that sometime in March 2013, he took a loan facility of N8,000,000 with intention to purchase a truck to facilitate his business

“Having confidence/trust on the Clergy who happens to be his childhood friend, he approached him for prayer and blessing for successful business venture.  The suspect commended his wisdom and instructed that he should bring the money for seven days most befitting special prayers from Allah.  The complainant obeyed as instructed and gave the N8,000,000 to the so-called Alfa, only to come back after seven days to discover that the Alfa has relocated to Ilorin and switched off his phone," She said.

Speaking further, the PPRO (Special Fraud Unit-Lagos) said;

 “The complainant further stated that the Alfa under the pretence of selling LEXUS 300 Car imported from USA to him, obtained additional N1.5 million and later registered the said vehicle in his name. He alleged that the total money collected from him by the suspect is N9.5 million and that the suspect used his money to build four bedroom flat and bought two cars (Mercedes Benz/Toyota Camry) within five months.

She also said that the so-called Alfa has been arrested by the Special Fraud Unit and he admitted that he committed the crime as alleged by the victim.

“The suspect was arrested and he made useful statement to the Police.  He is 34years old and a native of Ilorin in Kwara State.  He admitted that he tricked the complainant into believing that he can double the money. 

“He confessed that he instructed that the money should be put in a box in his room, unknown to the complainant that he has a spare key which he later used to unlock the box and made away with the money. 

“He admitted that he used part of the money to buy cars and to complete his building in Ilorin Kwara State while the remaining balance was shared among his fellow Alfas in Ila-Orangun in Osun State.  He pleaded for mercy and promised to refund the whole money collected.

DSP Ngozi Isintume-Agu however explained that Investigation is on-going and the suspect will be arraigned in court soonest.

Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police, Special Fraud Unit hereby advises the members of the public to be careful and wise when seeking for spiritual help from the so-called religious clerics as most of them are wolves in sheep’s clothing.
