The spill over of the Atlantic Ocean has invaded the shore of Iwuo Okpom Community in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, subsequently rendering about 1000 people homeless having submerged about six houses.

CEOAFRICA has learnt about this uprising from the statement of Obong Okon Akpanowong, the village head of Iwuo Okpom who revealed this while speaking to newsmen on Monday, at his palace in Ibeno Local Government Area.

The community leader complained that the shore protection contract which was awarded in 1992 by the Federal Government to two contractors, Kris Nick Construction Company (KNCC) and Smith Engineering in 2006 had failed.

He purported that the two contractors who had failed to handle satisfactorily the shore protection contract in Iwuo Okpo, refuse to show up in the site having collected mobilization fees.

Chairman of Iwuo Okpom Village Council, Chief John Etim, deliberating on the ugly development said the flood had eroded several acres of land within the community.

The Community leaders are however appealing to the State and Federal Governments to re-award the contract to a reputable contractor to forestall further encroachment of the ocean.
