There are strong indications that academic activities may be paralyzed on University campuses across the country  as from today [Tuesday] as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of Nigeria   may have declared fresh indefinite strike to compel the federal government to implement the agreement reached with the union in October 2009.

Our correspondent  gathered that an indications to the fresh strike might not be unconnected with a text message forwarded to some ASUU members at the nation's premier University [University of Ibadan] which reads “Good morning, this is to officially inform you that ASUU has declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite STRIKE from today 1/7/2013. Await further briefing. ASUU UI”.

The text message it was learnt was received with loud ovation by the ASUU members with most of them commending the decision of ASUU National Executive Council (NEC) on the decision to proceed on strike.
It was reliably gathered that ASUU NEC is expected to officially address a world press conference in Lagos today [Tuesday] on what necessitated the resumption of the strike by the union members

Sources close to ASUU NEC disclosed that the decision to resume the suspended strike included failure of the federal government to meet the funding requirements for revitalization of Nigerian Universities; progressive increase of annual budgetary allocation to education to 26percent percent between 2009 and 2020, earned allowances, and setting up of research and Development units by companies operating in Nigeria and teaching and research equipment provision to laboratories and classrooms.

The source added that ASUU took the decision after observing all possible means of making government implement the agreement yielded no results
