Rwanda has received a grant of 22,5million pounds from the United Kingdom government through its Department for International Development (DfID) for projects to mitigate climate changes impact on the country’s environmental protection.
CEOAFRICA gathered that the Minister of Natural Resources Stanislas Kamanzi explained that the money will be directed to the newly established Fonerwa (Fund for environment and climate change) an agency responsible for facilitation of direct access to international environment and climate finance.
“The fund was established to fund projects which aim at dealing with climate change and protection of the environment by looking for a new energy sources especially promoting the energy from our natural resources” Kamanzi said.
The head of DfID in Rwanda, Mr. Mike Hammond observed that Rwanda is vulnerable to climate change since the most of its population depends on agriculture.
In his remark, the Minister for Finance in Rwanda, Claver Gatete said that the British government has been supporting Rwanda in different areas such as education and agriculture through the budget.
