The fun called ‘dance’ could be funny

Dancing could be really interesting, enjoyable and relieving, particularly if it is your hubby. Though it may probably leave someone some pains to deal with later, but it is worth the act. Apparently in Nigeria, each tribe has its traditional way of dancing and with a glimpse into the modern artiste’s songs and the beat that follows the song, it could be deduced that the modern way is gradually taking over. Time has proven that even though the modern day artiste are imitating the traditional way of singing that in turn determines dance, the imitation is vice versa as the traditional norm is also wearing a modern day cap. As a writer, I have over years nurtured the view of people’s way of dancing even in church and I can’t help but question what ‘dance’ is all about. I have come to realise that as people have different preferences, it’s applicable to their way of reacting to musical beat. Though it could be funny, even when some don’t get the beat right and still put energy into dancing, but no matter how funny it may look, it is still fun on its own. The Nigerian most celebrated Azonto, Yahoozee, Alanta, Kukere, Skelewu and Shoki dance moves are quite funny, but really, they are fun and interesting. He, who plays the piper, dictates the tune they say and that is just the case of Nigerian artiste and fortunately for them, Nigerians are craving more for funny dance steps. During the 2015 general electoral campaign, it was really surprising to see the former Governor of Lagos State, Raji Fashola dance shoki, even with his snake hand like move. Moreover, hardly will a wedding ceremony be sighted without these trending dance steps and perhaps choirs in church also stylishly follow the trend while ministering. Meanwhile, some experts blame the bad education system on social media, but I say music industry should also be probed. All work no play make jack a dull boy they say and that is the case of a small school boy, who followed the trend after learning the ‘one eye closed’ dance and decided to show his stunt even while fully dressed for school. I cannot but laugh as well with the style of Azonto dance, which can only be described as if one mistakenly poured hot water on one’s self. The fact is just that all these dance moves have their uniqueness and weirdness, which audience happily clamours for. When CEO AFRICA interviewed some dance lovers, it was revealed that majority dance to follow trend, while minority do in the name of love they have for dancing. Okeowo Olaitan, a graduate and a dance lover said she dances because she loves to. “I got to a point in my life that once I hear musical beat, even by the road sides, I nod or shake my body a little bit. Dancing has become part of me, I just like it, not that I do to entertain people, but it pleases me to dance. It excites me a lot.” Ogunremi Ifeoluwa actually confessed that she dance to feel among and not because she loves to. “I really don’t know how to dance, but when the situation warrants; maybe in church, I have to give thanks to God for his goodness and sometimes, I dance away my sorrow.” Adeoye Yinka, while reacting to this said, “There are different reasons anyone would want to dance. I could dance as a form of exercise, I could dance to express happiness and I could dance to show a new step. “But the thing with dancing is, it is as simple as just nodding, moving your hands or your legs or conventionally, all parts of your body. “When Kaffy; the dance queen and team broke record for longest dancing hours, they were practically just shaking their bodies, not vigorously.” Yinka added that dancing to feel among and based on one’s interest has psychological effect in both ways. According to him, it could either be because of high self esteem of low esteem. “If I dance because I want to feel among, it’s because of low esteem and I’m just trying to buy my way into people’s life by doing what they do.”
