An educationist, Dr Saka Ominiwe has described the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as a disaster not only to the education sector but to other sectors of the economy. Ominiwe while speaking with newsmen on the ongoing strike over non-implementation of an agreement reached with union by the Federal Government in 2009 in Ibadan on Sunday in Ibadan said the situation should of great concern to well meaning Nigerians.

While noting that education being the bedrock of any development, he warned that any serious government must not play with the crucial sector,

"This sector is for purpose of refreshing our memory and feeds other sectors, hence when sick all other sectors will also ill.

"This explains why Nigeria as a country is in shambles today, simply because a good product of any educational institution who is trained with fear of God will definitely be party to any unholy ventures when in any authority at any level," he said.

According to him, the doors of the nation's universities have been shut to serious academic activities since July, any well meaning Nigerians will not be happy with the situation on ground. Ominiwe who I'd the President, Legacy Educational College, Ibadan, Oyo State, said that the future leaders and engine room of any nation were not doing what they supposed to be doing, was a disaster. He said the failure by the Federal Government to met the agreement reached with the union was unfair.

He called on both parties to sheathed their swords by going back to the round table meeting with sincerity and fear of God. He suggested that government must provide 34 per cent of the agreement reached in 2009 and the remaining 66 per cent in two consecutive batches while the lectures should deliver.
