As today 22nd of August marks the World Jollof rice day, Nigerians celebrate the food on every Nigerian table whether sumptuous or not.
The curiosity about how the food evolved has been a subject of great debate in West Africa, as many countries have their own version and claim the dish.
Adaobi Ifeachor in her survey on people’s opinion about the nativity of the dish among West African countries revealed this:
21% |
Nigeria |
5% |
Cameroon |
12% |
Botswana |
23% |
Senegal |
40% |
Ghana |
Thus, majority holds on to the fallacy that the food evolved in Ghana, but historical antecedents reveal that the food was actually a local delicacy of the Wolof people in modern day Senegal and the Gambia.
