GWERU businessman, Webster Chiteta (36), who skipped bail and fled to South Africa has been arrested.
Chiteta had been bailed after being arrested in April 2013 on allegations of murdering his wife. He appeared in court yesterday after he was nabbed by Gweru police in the city following a tip-off.
Gweru magistrate Tayengwa Chibanda remanded Chiteta in custody at Whawha Prison to September 28 for trial when the High Court resumes.
Chiteta, popularly known as Dzatu, who owns Camvalve Recovery Company, allegedly strangled his wife to death under unclear circumstances. In September last year, police launched a manhunt when Chiteta, who was remanded out of custody on $1 000 bail, failed to appear for trial at the Gweru High Court Circuit after he reportedly escaped to neighbouring South Africa.
Allegations against Chiteta of No 46 Mtapa Flats are that on April 3, 2013, he retired to bed at around 1:30am.
When the now-deceased, Winnie Tracy Phiri, joined him in bed at about 3:30am, Chiteta allegedly strangled her to death before making a false report of sudden death at Mtapa Police Station.
But a postmortem report by a doctor revealed that the death was a result of dislocation of the cervical spine and excessive movement of the neck.
