COPPERBELT University School of Medicine dean Professor Kasonde Bowa says Zambia is in need of more doctors and young people must utilise the opportunity by studying medicine.

Addressing the youth at a Meet The Professionals event organised by the Cathedral of Christ the King youths in Ndola, Prof Bowa said the shortage of doctors in the country called for investment and training of more young people with a passion for the career.

He said being a doctor was not an easy job as it called for discipline and patience.

“You young people should aspire to fill up this gap. Consult people who have excelled in this profession so that they can help you make informed decisions. Do not be in a hurry to finish school, if you are, then medicine is not for you,” Prof Bowa said.

He also said motivational talks on career choices should be encouraged at all times to help the country get meaningful future leaders.

“Employment levels are very low in this country; it is important to adequately prepare young people. The more information you have in making a career choice, the better chance you have to know what you have ahead of you. This puts you at an advantage in choosing a career that is suitable,” Prof Bowa said.

He also commended the Catholic Church for the initiative of guiding young people in their career choices.

Prof Bowa further challenged individuals willing to take up the medical profession to be bold and take part in helping the nation in coming up with a sustainable health sector.
