It has been confirmed that Oscar Pistorius’s parole will be reviewed on 18 September. The Week reported that the timely interference by Masutha was made on the day that would have been Reeva Steenkamp’s 32nd birthday raising suppositions whether the 28 year-old sprinter’s high-profile prisoner status has affected Masutha’s decision. The Paralympic athlete was expected to be released from prison in Pretoria a week ago to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest in his uncle’s home. Those papers will be in response to a separate appeal by prosecutors seeking a murder conviction. That Supreme Court appeal will be heard in November. But Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha – who was urged by a women’s group to halt the transfer – said that according to his reading of the law, the board shouldn’t have even considered the transfer until the 10-month mark. Judge Thokozile Masipa rejected arguments by the prosecution that he killed her intentionally and accepted Pistorius’ version that he mistook the 29-year-old model for an intruder. The decision has been returned to the parole board for reconsideration, which could take up to four months. The double-amputee runner was denied early release last week after serving 10 months of his five-year manslaughter sentence for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013. Steenkamp’s parents have said previously they were unhappy with the court’s sentencing but this is the first time they have publicly questioned the verdict. Meanwhile, the State is asking that Pistorius be convicted of murder, or that he be retried.
