President Jacob Zuma commiserated with South Africans as the nation mourns the death of veteran small screen actor, Roland Mqwebu, popularly known as Mkhize in the sitcom Emzini Wezinsizwa.

Mqwebu died on Friday morning at the age of 74 years after a long illness.

President Zuma said he was saddened to learn of this celebrated legend in the field of arts and culture.

"The industry has lost one of its much loved and talented actors and the country is much poorer without him. On behalf of government and all South Africans we convey our sincere condolences to the Mqwebu family, relatives, friends and all in the entertainment industry. May Mr Mqwebu's soul rest in eternal peace," the President said on Saturday.

Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa as well as Communications Minister Faith Muthambi were also shocked by the Mqwebu's death.

Minsiter Mthethwa said the Emzini Wezinsizwa had come out at an historic moment in South Africa.

"It did not only bring together households who sat in front of their TV screens' but it also bridged the gap between different ethnic groups in South Africa and the region."

He added that his light will continue to shine through generations as one of the torchbearers in the arts fraternity.

Minister Muthambi for her part said Mqwebu had made his mark as an actor.

"Emzini Wezinsiswa was a household name brand, and enjoyed high viewership ratings on SABC. We wish his family, friends and colleagues strength during this difficult time. Our hearts are with them," said Minister Muthambi.

Mqwebu will be remembered for his role in feature films and dramas such as the internationally acclaimed Shaka Zulu in which he played the role of Ngomane' King Shaka's friend.

He was also an accomplished public relations practitioner and marketing expert. He was a brand manager for a rice brand for many years, a job he executed with diligence before retirement.
