Kenya’s national boxing team 'Hit Squad' is expected to improve on their seemingly underwhelming performance at the last edition in Maputo, where they bagged only a bronze medal.

Nevertheless, the current squad-comprising of Peter Mungai (light fly), Simon Mulinge (fly weight), Benson Gichara (bantam), Nick Okoth (light weight), Victor Odhiambo (light welter) captain Rayton Okwiri (welter-weight), Black Moses Mathenge (middle), Tobias Okeyo (light-heavy) will have to work tirelessly to emulate or even surpass the previous medal tallies.

Okwiri is arguably the best Kenya's medal prospect, having lost in the semis in the last continental showcase in Maputo.

The 24 year-old boxer is currently among the best placed in his category having lost narrowly during the World boxing Championships in Kazakhstan two year ago. " I am using this championship as part of my build-up for the forthcoming World boxing Championships in Doha next month and hopefully, I will qualify for the Olympics in Rio next year," added the pugilist.

The national head coach Albert Matitu is a man full of confidence having trained the team in a residential camp for over a month before landing in Brazzaville. "Our training gives me confidence in my team and I am hoping for nothing short of five medals," said the seasoned trainer.

Meanwhile, the Kenya badminton team begin their quest for the continental showcase today, aiming to better their performance in Maputo four years ago, where two of their players Mercy Joseph (women singles) and Patrick Kinywa (men singles) lost in the quarters.

This year's edition comprises of six players namely Victor Odera (captain), Joseph Madheri, Patrick Kinywa, Mercy Joseph, Lavina Martin and Sheila Muthoni.

The head coach John Odhiambo is sure the men's single, women's single and mixed doubles are going to qualify for the quarters.

"The kind of shuttlecock (ball) we have been training with is the most advanced and is the very ball used in this tournament, giving us an edge over the rest," said Odhiambo.
