Nigerian sprint queen Blessing Okagbare yesterday registered her dominance in Congo felt when she ran the second leg for the women's quartet, en route to winning the 4x100m relay event gold in 43.11secs.
The Nigerian quartet in the women's 4×100 metres race also had Cecilia Francis, Ngozi Onwumere and Lawretta Ozoh. Okagbare who took the mantle in the second leg of the relay race, helped the team open a huge lead that saw them finish the race in good time.
However, the male sprints relay quartet were disqualified for baton exchange outside the restricted line which ended Nigeria's hunt in that section.
Francis ran the opening leg of the race before handing the baton to Okagbare who ran a solid race to widen the gap between Nigeria and the other contending teams.
All Onwumere needed to do in the third leg was sustain the huge lead which the double Commonwealth Games sprint champion had opened up. And the anchor leg of the race, Ozoh, just had to coast to the finish line once Onwumere handed over the baton to her in the final 100 metres.
As at yesterday afternoon, Nigeria was placed fourth on the medals table with 63 medals. The medals are 17 gold, 25 silver and 21 bronze medals.
