Kenya’s Boniface Mweresa finished second to Botswana's Isaac Makwal in the 400 metres to increase his country’s haul of medals at the ongoing All Africa Games.

The braided Makwal led from the front and dared anyone to catch him, a challenge no one came close to taking up with the Batswana finishing first in 44.35 and Mweresa second in 45.01

Kenyan women failed to emulate their male compatriots in the 3,000m steeplechase, failing to strike gold in the country's favourite race. They managed only bronze through Purity Cherotich who finished the race in 9:52.54

The goal and silver medals went to perennial rivals Ethiopia through Sofia Aseefa (9:51.30) and Hiwot Ayelew(9:51.94).

It could have been different had Cherotich not slipped at the water barrier midway through the race. She failed to recover leaving her at the mercy of the two Ethiopians.

Ayelew with her graceful long legs led at the bell and looked on course to clinch gold for her country only for Aseefa to clench her teeth for one final burst that propelled her to victory.

Kenya's dismal night on the track was compounded further as Prisca Tambunda absented herself from the starting line up in the 100m hurdles final despite having qualified for the race. The race was eventually won by Nigerian Amusan Owula who stormed home in 13.15 to take the gold.

Kenya's shortcomings in the sprints in comparison to the West African nations was evident again in the 4X100m relay as the ladies team anchored by Eunice Kadogo finished outside the medal bracket. They clocked a decent time of 44.75 which was only good enough for fourth behind eventual winners Nigeria (43.10), Ivory Coast (43.72) and Ghana (43.98).

Yesterday Kenya had the opportunity to make amends for failing to win any of the four track finals they qualified for as the duo of Jackson Kivuva and 2012 London Olympics silver medalist Timothy Kitum were due to take part in the 800m final. The duo reached the final in contrasting fashion with Kivuva qualifying fastest in the two lap event in a time of 1.46:65 while Kitum huffed and puffed his way to the finish line in 1.50.07.

Kivuva's time judging by the qualifying times recordeed stood to finish in the medal brackets. In the 400m Kenya were to be represented by Willian Mutunga who won his heat to qualify for last nights final. Compatriot Kiprono Koskei was eliminated in the semi finals.
