The Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA) have decried low response of students to enrol for agricultural programmes in universities and college of agriculture.

The concern was expressed via a Communiqué signed by Emeka Okereke, director general of ECCIMA, resource analyst, Peter Nnabude, issued in Enugu after its 4th National Agricultural Exhibition and Symposium.

According to a professor, the situation indicates that agricultural transformation agenda had yet to have impact on the youths.

Agencies charged with agricultural development are called upon to carry their crusade to the youth through university and colleges. Also relevant ministries and agencies involved in agriculture transformation are invited to explore avenues to collaborate with ECCIMA to promote the agrarian revolution.

The communiqué also calls on Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Bank of Agriculture (BoA) to sponsor model agricultural farms in universities and colleges to encourage skills acquisition and entrepreneurship in agriculture among the youths.

The federal government was however appreciated towards revamping the agricultural sector stating that it is necessary for the development of the economy.
