
Osun State governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola has vowed to sack any agricultural extension officer that fails to perform up to expectation, the governor has also ordered the officers to leave their offices and go to the farms
Aregbesola made this vow while signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) at his office in Osogbo.
The governor said agricultural extension officer would be attached to a group of farmers, adding that such officers will supervise the activities of the farmers under them and train the farmers on modern farming.
The governor added that every officer must determine a specific crop in which he would specialise and train farmers on how to cultivate such crop.
He warned that any agric extension officer that failed to perform to expectation would be sacked or demoted.
Aregbesola explained that the MoU between Osun and the IITA was part of the efforts aimed at making agriculture the mainstay of the economy of the state.
In his address, the Director-General of IITA, Dr Nteranya Sanging, stated that it was time for Nigeria to move from its dependence on oil. He said that agriculture was one of the best ways to get the teeming youth of Africa employed.
