The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry has elected Dr. Nike Akande as its president for the next two years.

A statement from the LCCI said the election followed the expiration of the President, Mr. Remi Bello’s tenure.

The statement quoted the Director-General, LCCI, Mr. Muda Yusuf, as saying,“Dr. Akande emerged as the President after a duly conducted election at the Chamber’s 127th Annual General Meeting held on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at the LCCI office in Lagos.

“Indeed, we are very pleased as Dr. Akande assumes the role of the President of LCCI. As a council member and a key officer of the Chamber, she has brought her extensive knowledge and experience to bear and has provided inspirational leadership and direction to the Chamber.

“Her election will ensure and enhance the Chamber’s role as a leading advocate of best business policy and practice, with a view to promoting and protecting the interest of its members and the business community at large.”

The statement read in part, “Dr. Akande, a two-time Minister of Industry in Nigeria, is an astute boardroom executive who has served the Chamber in various capacities…

“Dr. Akande is an Investment expert and an Harvard-trained professional, who sits on the board of many blue-chip companies in Nigeria. She is also the first female President of the Harvard Business School Association of Nigeria, the position she held between 2010 and 2012.

“Dr. Akande is an honorary Life Vice President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.

“She is set to be formally inaugurated as the President of the Chamber on Saturday December 5, 2015 at an Investiture Ceremony billed to hold in Lagos.”

Meanwhile, the outgoing President, Mr. Remi Bello, is seeking legislation to protect the rights of entrepreneurs.

According to Bello, legislation becomes necessary in view of the recent cases of arbitrary levies, fines, taxes, multiple taxation, abuse of powers and absence of a level playing field that businesses in the country are exposed to.
