Following the release of the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, by a high court in Abuja, members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) at the Onitsha end of the Niger Bridge, on Thursday, clashed with soldiers during jubilation, resulting in the death of a soldier and four IPOB members.

Trouble started when, on hearing about court’s verdict on Kanu, IPOB members converged on the statue of the late Biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, and started jubilating.

According to an eyewitness, it all started when the IPOB members were asked by the soldiers to stop their march towards the Niger Bridge, but the group refused and continued to advance towards the bridge.

Consequently, the soldiers started shooting sporadically and in the process, four IPOB members died and many other injured.

It was gathered that the members fought back in retaliation, killing a soldier in the process.

All efforts to get police reaction proved abortive as the Divisional Police Officer in charged of Fegge police station, Mr. Rabiu Garba, was said to have travelled out of Onitsha and Police Public Relation Officer, Mr. Ali Okechukwu. could not be reached on phone.
