The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Aba branch, Abia State, has condemned the non-payment of salaries by the Okezie Ikpeazu’s administration to the recalled non-indgene workers in Abia State, who the last administration disengaged.

The NBA Aba Chairman, Mr. Kenneth Nwakamma in an interview, said that the association was not happy with the non-payment of salaries to the workers recalled by the current administration in Abia, as they were facing serious hardship.

He said that the NBA Aba had earlier drawn the state government’s attention to the workers’ plight, promising that the association would follow up on the matter.

He said: “The NBA has come out openly to condemn such injustice. We are not resting on our oars, we have it on our agenda and when we return in January 2016, we will take a more pro-active step to address that issue.

“Everybody in this society is affected by this injustice in one way or the other. If it is not your brother or sister, it could be your friend or in-law. We are condemning it because it is not a welcome development and it is not something that should be allowed to continue.”

Earlier, the spokesperson for the disengaged workers in Abia, Mrs. Fidelia Ihejirika told Vanguard that Governor Ikpeazu had invited them to Umuahia where he promised that they would be recalled and paid.

She wondered why after the governor’s address and promises, nothing cheering had happened seven months after.

“Till this moment, we are talking, not up to half the number of the disengaged workers have been recalled and among this number not even one person had been paid salary since seven months now,” she said.

According to her, the government should re-absorb disengaged workers who are still willing to return to work and pay off those not willing to return to work to reduce their stress.
