About 300 Nigerians who are studying at the Constanta Maritime University in Romania may be expelled from school over the failure of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to pay their tuition and other allowances. The affected students are currently studying in the institution on scholarship funded by NIMASA.

Daily Post reported that the students were said to be in their first, second and third year at the institution.

The students are studying engineering, navigation and naval transport and the total tuitions are reported said to be €5,720 which is about N1.23m currently.

The maritime agency had sent about 2,500 Nigerian on scholarship to India, United Kingdom, Romania and The Philippines to study marine engineering, nautical sciences and naval architecture under the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme.

According to reports, the institution has allegedly threatened to deport the Nigerian students back to the country if the tuition is not offset soon.

“We are stranded, confused and cannot concentrate on our studies based on the unfortunate news of expulsion unleashed to them by the school.

 “The school has said that if by 30th of January the school fees are not paid it has no option than to return us back home,” a source close to the institution said.

One of the students stated that the university officials had made moves to contact NIMASA on the impasses but did not get positive reply from the agency concerning the future of the school.
