How A Fan Sexually Harassed Me – Funke Etti

Funke Etti is a relatively known Nollywood actress who has seen the ups and downs of life. But like the proverbial phoenix, she always rises from the ashes.

She revealed in this encounter that it’s because she love acting that is why she ventured into the industry. “To me, acting is like when somebody is pregnant; you don’t have to tell anybody you are pregnant, people will know. I believe it’s all about the talent. When I told one of my sisters who worked in the Census board that I wanted to go into acting, she told me to go and face my studies. Then I met Funsho Adeolu and told my aunt that he had agreed to put me through in the industry. But my sister was against it, saying she would introduce me to another person that would not harass me. But I told myself there is no way one would not be harassed. But then, we are all adults; if you are not interested in something nobody can force you. That is why I always look with contempt at some people who say producers, marketers or directors are harassing them; I don’t see it as an issue. Some marketers and directors will ask you out, they are men, these things are expected, but it is now left for you to decide if you are interested. Even if you are not an actress, people will still ask you out, it’s okay as along as since you are not raped.

The way you are speaking, it seems you have not been sexually harassed?

Most of the harassment we encounter comes from our fans. Why should people be calling you around 2 am or 3 am? When you pick the call, all you hear is “hello love” and you look at the time and the name of the person calling if it’s truly your loved one, but it is not. Imagine that! There was a time a male voice called me and immediately I picked the call, he sounded as if he was making love to me. You see, these are the kinds of harassment we suffer. You will be hearing haaa, huuum…The first time someone called me like that he didn’t cut the call; I had to cut it myself. So you can imagine such scenario. If I had not cut the call, the person might not have cut it that is harassment at its peak.

Are you truly controversial?

Most people don’t know much about me. There was a time I was on location and I overheard my boss telling somebody that Funke does not dress to expose her body. But, can you believe that when I was at another location a lady was overheard telling my boss that I had changed my way of dressing, saying at the location that she used to dress very well, but now I have been exposing my body. Can you believe that? She never knew me, but she was judging me and speaking about me based on what she heard from my boss. It was somebody that called and told me what the lady said about me. So, I can tell you authoritatively that I am not controversial.
