Sir Anthony Caro, British sculptor dies at 89

News reaching CEOAFRICA.com is that a British sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro died of a heart attack at the age 89.

According to sources, Sir Anthony was widely regarded as the greatest British sculptor of his generation.

Sir Anthony played a pivotal role in the development of 20th Century sculpture, after first coming to public attention with a show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1963.

The artist had vowed to keep working until he was 100, as he unveiled his most recent exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in London in June.

He was born in Surrey in 1924 and studied engineering at Christ's College Cambridge, before going on to specialise in sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools in London until 1952.

The sculptor has won many prizes, among which 2008’s Jack Goldhill is Award for Sculpture for his piece Promenade. Awarded by the Royal Academy of Arts, the £10,000 prize goes to the creator of "an outstanding piece of sculpture".
