The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina has revealed that the Federal Government is working out support line for farmers to boost local production of fish.

CEOAFRICA gathered that the boost support is targeted towards drastic reduction of the over N80 billion spent annually on fish importation into the country.

In another development still on agriculture, the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Co-operative, Gbolahan Lawal stated that the state government will continue its annual distribution of inputs to fish farmers and aid marketability of their produce via the Eko marts being established in different parts of the state.

Dr. Adesina and Lawal declared this in Lagos at the commissioning of an ultra-modern floating fish feed plant, a private initiative of Akin-Saturu Farm along the Lekki corridor, stressing that the support for farmers will include extension of credit facility.

However report by analysts have disclosed that out of about two million tons of fish consumed in Nigeria annually, only about 700,000 tons are produced locally while the rest of about 1.3 million tons are being imported.
