India-Several coaches of a passenger train have derailed in India's Maharashtra state, killing at least two people and injuring 25 others on Friday morning.

Reports stated that the Mangala Express was travelling from Delhi to Ernakulam in southern Kerala state when it derailed near Nasik city.

Rescue teams have been sent to the accident site, with reports of some passengers trapped.

India's railway network operates 9,000 passenger trains and carries some 18 million passengers every day.

Reports say trains travelling on the busy route between Nasik and the western city of Mumbai have been halted after the incident.

In August, 28 people were killed after being hit by an express train while crossing the tracks in the state of Bihar.

Train accidents in India have killed over 1,200 people over the past five years, railway officials say.
