UGANDA- Eria Likwago, the Mayor of Kampala, who was labeled a staunch opponent of President Yoweri Museveni,  has been found guilty by a government tribunal of charges that could see him kicked out of office.

Reports indicated that Lukwago was accused by local leaders of disobedience to directives and inciting the public against paying taxes.

CEOAFRICA.com gathered from the Minister of Kampala, Frank Tumwebaze, that a meeting of city councilors would be held in two weeks time, to decide Lukwago’s political fate, as findings now gave the Kampala Capital City Authority the legal ground to impeach him.

“The councilors will deliberate on it. They can take a decision either to say, ‘we forgive you Lord Mayor, you have no case,’ or ‘we remove you.’ All that is in the law,” he stated.

Meanwhile, some political bigwigs in the country belief Lukwago’s trial were just to get rid of him. Prominent opposition politician, Besigye, at a news conference held yesterday, told journalists that President Museveni’s plot to gain total control of the capital city prompted the plots to remove Lukwago

“The process of censuring and removing the Lord Mayor from office has been patently and comprehensively fraud. The reason they had to override any kind of rules and laws is because of the overwhelming political desire of Mr. Museveni to take over Kampala through the back door,” said Besigye.
