Senate Approves the Appointment of Prof. Salau as the New South West Zonal Chairman of INEC

The Senate today, November 27, confirmed the nomination of Professor M. Salau as the new South West Zonal Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Prof. Salau’s nomination by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was ratified during the plenary of the Senate at the chamber after some senators have commented about the nominee.

In his speech, Sen. Olufemi Lanlehin (APC, Oyo South), described Prof. Salau as an intelligent administrator who left good legacies behind during his reign as the Vice-Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, Oyo State. He said the don would display high level of integrity if given the opportunity to serve the nation.

Sen. Uche Chukwumerije (PDP Abia) said INEC need to absorb people of Prof. Salau’s caliber into its fold if truly the body is ready to conduct credible election in 2015.

Sen. Ayo Adeseun (APC, Oyo Central), added that during the reign of Prof. Salau as the Vice-Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, the institution jointly owned by both Oyo and Osun State, did not experience any rancor regarding selection of principal officers. According to him, Prof. Salau exhibited a high sense of intelligence to handle affairs which promote equal representation from both States.

At the end of various explanations about the nominee, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekwermadu, who presided over the plenary, approved the appointment of the don as the new South West Zonal Chairman of INEC.
