The winner of December 1st, 2016 presidential election in the Gambia, Adama Barrow says there is no need for President Yahya Jammeh to seek asylum which he is confident direct talks can solve the country’s political crisis.

Ceoafrica gathered that Adama Barrow said that he was confident he would be sworn in next week despite President Yahya Jammeh’s refusal to cede power to him on the 19th of January which would serve as his inaugural day.

Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari who is due in Banjul to try and broker an end to the deadlock, has been informed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), alongside his team to the country to ensure Adama Barrow’s safety and peaceful transition of power.

Nigerian lawmakers have however, voted to offer President Jammeh asylum to help negotiations.

In a tweet, African Union commission chief Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said that “The #AU is working with #ECOWAS Leaders and the stakeholders of The Gambia to ensure a smooth transition of authority on 19 Jan 2017”.
