Nigeria’s Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu will send a proposal to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the possibility of using the newly developed electronic voting machine for the conduct of 2019 elections.

According to Ceoafrica, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), had last month launched a solar-powered electronic voting machine which is capable of eliminating electoral malpractices with additional ability of reducing cost of conducting elections in the country.

The INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, had on Monday told legislators at the National Assembly that his commission would not use the NASENI’s electronic voting device because there was no constitutional provision for that.

However, NASENI’s Director General, Prof. Mohammed Sanni Haruna, told reporters that Dr Onu will soon send a proposal to INEC on the possibility of using the new invention to conduct the 2019 elections.

He said the minister would invite the INEC chairman and his team to witness a mock election to be conducted with the electronic device.
