The Federal Government has been urged to give special consideration to the funding of the first higher institution in the country, the University of Ibadan considering its long term establishment and decay in the infrastructures.

The institution's Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Folorunsho Adewole while speaking on the third year of his administration in Ibadan, declared that the institution deserves special funding.

The university administrator, who noted that the institution ought to be treated as the first generation university since others came 14 years after, stressed the need for adequate funding on the 65-year-old institution.

According to him, considering the years of its establishment, most of the infrastructures need replacement adding that that most of the water pipes laid 65 years ago has rotten and need to be changed.

While noting that the institution enjoys capital allocation from the government and endowments from individuals, international bodies and corporate organizations, he stressed for the school to look for alternative funding devoid of government intervention.

He said efforts were on to ensure that projects that would generate additional funds into the university's coffer were put in place.

Adewole who did not agree that there was rot in the education sector, said the present universities in the country were not enough to accommodate Nigerians who were clamoring for education.

He said more universities should be established to charge more applicants who could be admitted by various universities in the country.

While admitting that there challenges in the sector, he called for massive reconstruction right from primary to post primary.

The university administrator noted that government alone cannot do it and call on the general public to see education as a necessary tool for development and avenue to generate money.
