Majority of taxi operators in South Africa have gathered at Johannesburg's main airport to protest against ride-hailing app, UBER.

Ceoafrica gathered that the Meter Taxi Association in South Africa says UBER drivers do not pay for operation permits and are calling for authorities to ban its operations.

Police say the protest, which has been causing chaos to east of Johannesburg is illegal and that they will clear taxi operators who are blocking the main roads leading to the airport.

UBER, which operates in a number of African cities, was launched in South Africa four years ago and since then it has attracted half a million users and 4,000 drivers. 

It was also further gathered that UBER drivers are also holding a small demonstration in Johannesburg calling for protection against attacks from metered taxi-operators.
