In commemoration of the 2017 International Women’s Day (IWD), the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Sen. Aisha Jummai Alhassan, has called for a gender equitable society through the use of instrumentality of various national and international legislative provisions.
According to Ceoafrica, she called for the use of VAPP Act 2015, the Child Rights Act, the National Action Plan on UNSCR1325 among others in ensuring an egalitarian society.
The minister stated this in Abuja at a symposium themed ‘Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50:50 by 2030’.
According to her, “Although women are fewer than men in positions of authority, their performance is an eye opener to the fact that under representation of women in leadership position needs more attention if the country is to attain the aims of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA)”.
On her part, the Associate Country Director of Oxfam-Nigeria, Evelyn Mere, said the ‘Be Bold for Change’ theme chosen by the United Nations (UN) for 2017 IWD can play a big part in driving better outcome for women.
