NIGERIA (Rivers) –Aftermath of the fracas which occurred in Port Harcourt last Sunday where police allegedly shot Senator Magnus Abe during a rally, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, yesterday, met with the State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mbu.

It was alleged that Police shot Senator Abe with rubber bullets while firing teargas to disperse those that had gathered for a rally organized by Save Rivers Movement.

The Committee led by Senator Paulinus Igwe, told newsmen, that they were in the state to get useful information that would help to unravel the mystery behind the issue.

Senator Igwe, who arrived with Senator Hadi Sirika, assured that his committee would go about its job without bias.

“The Police Committee is not here to witchhunt anybody.   Ours is to be unbiased. The Police should open up and tell us what happened,” he said.

On his part, Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr. Joseph Mbu, said the state command of the Police does not have rubber bullets, adding that the Save Rivers Movement did not obtain Police permit for the rally.

“What were expended on that day were canisters of tear gas. Police only use live bullets when repelling robbers,” he said.

When the Committee visited Government House, the Chief of Staff, Mr. Tony Okocha, told them that Sen. Abe was shot with rubber bullets by the police at close range.

The committee also visited the College of Arts and Science scene of the incident with the Police Commissioner, Mr. Mbu.
