Local observers says they cannot state whether the October 26 repeat presidential election was free, fair and credible.
However, the Election Observation Group (Elog) on Wednesday said the absence of party agents in polling stations, save for Jubilee Party’s, as well as absence of observers may have compromised the outcome of the poll.
LEGITIMACY
Elog noted that the repeat election may not have been conducted in line with the Supreme Court order that it be done in strict adherence to the Constitution and applicable laws.
The group claimed some forms used in the election were tampered while others were not signed but remained mum on whether President Kenyatta’s re-election is legitimate.
They called on Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko to investigate those behind the alleged poll irregularities.
The observers also noted that voters were disenfranchised in areas where voting failed to take place.
Some 26 constituencies, mainly in Nyanza, failed to go to poll due to security fears sparked by anti-poll demos.
REGISTER
The IEBC said it would not hold elections in parts of Migori, Siaya, Kisumu and Homa Bay, saying it was satisfied that even if the over 1 million took part in the poll, the outcome would not change the final results.
The observers poked holes in Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s preparations for the poll.
The voter register, they said, is faulty and IEBC violated the law by failing to publish the list on time.
IEBC published the register a day to election.
“IEBC never cleaned its register despite KPMG recommendations,” Ms Regina Opondo, the Elog chairperson, told journalists in Nairobi.
The observers called for dialogue as the way forward in addressing the current political crisis.
