A private school in Gilgil, Nakuru County has been deregistered by the Ministry of Education for alleged exam malpractice. In a letter dated November 13 to the school principal, Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang noted that St. Theresa Girls Senior School was involved in examination malpractice last week on or about November 9 and November 10.

The school, which has a total of 109 students, had registered 37 candidates to sit for this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). Earlier, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Nancy Macharia visited the school where she inspected the institution and the kick off of Mathematics Paper Two. However when she interacted with the teachers she never intimated on the alleged exam malpractice at the institution but warned teachers against being involved in exam malpractice.

The school has six teachers employed by the School’s board of management. Dr. Kipsang noted that the ministry’s decision to deregister the school was provided in the Basic Education Act, 2013. “Following the examination malpractices which occurred in your school on or about 9th November, 2017, it has been decided that the registration of your school as provided for in the Basic Education Act, 2013, be revoked with effect from 1 December 2017,” reads a section of the letter.

 The ministry has further advised the school management to notify parents, teachers and students of the decision and immediately hand over its current certificate to the secretary-County Education Board (CEB).
